DIY Roof Inspection: Checking For Winter Damage

As the winter weather calms down and slowly turns to spring, it’s time to check on your house and assess any potential winter damage. 2. Examine Your Roof Outside. Start by checking your roof from a distance to ensure the slope on both sides is even and that no sections are buckling inward. Check that there are no missing or cracked shingles and that the coloration on the shingles is all the same, as shingles missing granules and appearing a different color have likely been damaged by hail. Also check for dents from hail. If you notice larger damages to the roof, such as deformations or objects on-site (such as trees or satellites), do not attempt to remove these or otherwise try to fix the situation on your own. Instead, call a professional. Trying to fix large roofing issues by yourself can lead to more damage and can also lead to injury.
3. Look At The Gutters. After you’ve checked the roof at a distance, it’s time to get closer. Check inside your gutters by getting on a ladder with someone else holding it by the base. Look into the gutter to see if there is any debris blocking the flow of water, such as twigs, dead leaves, and other objects. These objects can be removed by hand. If your gutters are suffering issues caused by ice dams or if the joints of the gutter are rusted or have holes, call a professional. If your gutters have freezing related to ice dams, an attempt to fix the problem yourself may further damage your roof, as ice dams can go deceptively far into the roofline.
4. Call An Expert. Sometimes you find issues with your roof that need professional attention, other times you may not want to or are not able to inspect your roof yourself.
